Jesse Evans-Schroeder, October 2024 Outstanding Volunteer of the Month

Jesse Evans-Schroeder did not set out to be a lawyer. Originally from Iowa, Jesse
moved to Tucson when she was 12. She set off for Flagstaff for her undergraduate
studies, then later lived in Madison, Seattle, and San Francisco. She returned to Tucson,
where she has lived for the past 20 years.

Jesse’s journey into law began after years of working in homeless services, domestic
violence services, and child abuse prevention. Wanting to make a more enduring impact,
she had an inkling a law degree would provide her with new opportunities to make a
difference in the lives of vulnerable people. It was the perfect fit! Jesse discovered a
passion for immigration law, realizing that it combined her dedication to social service
with opportunities to make lasting changes in the lives of noncitizens and their families.

Today, Jesse is a partner and the director of litigation at Green Evans-Schroeder
Immigration and Criminal Defense, where she specializes in deportation defense.
She represents detained and nondetained individuals in removal proceedings at the
intersection of immigration and criminal law. Jesse also handles asylum cases and
assists victims of domestic violence and other crimes eligible for immigration benefits.

For Jesse, the best part of being a lawyer is building close relationships with her clients
and working alongside them to advocate for their freedom, safety, and family unity.
She adds that getting up every day to fight for the rights of noncitizens in the U.S
immigration court system can be a daring undertaking.

Jesse shares these immigration stories with her children — whom she calls “my
proudest accomplishment” — as lessons in courage, perseverance, and survival. They
are often inspired by the bravery of her clients. Jesse enjoys reading, running, and
kettlebell workouts to manage stress. A tiny island cottage in Ontario, in her family for
more than 65 years, provides peace, quiet, and beauty to her and her family.

Thank you, Jesse, for taking on some of our most complex immigration cases. You have
made a difference in the lives of many.
