2025 Justice Champion: Luke E. Brown

Hats off to one of Southern Arizona Legal Aid’s all-time favorite volunteer lawyers, Luke E. Brown, who was recently appointed
as a commissioner to the Arizona Superior Court in Pima County.

For more than a decade, Luke donated hundreds of hours to SALA’s clients in need, especially for Spanish-speaking clients.

Considering his busy work and family life — he is the father of 5-year-old twin girls and three other children, after all! — we were
fortunate indeed that he found time to volunteer as the teacher of SALA’s Spanish-speaking Divorce Class.

Until recently, Luke and his law partner Jeffrey Wohlford practiced family law in Southern Arizona at Brown and Wohlford, PLLC.
Luke is a certified specialist in family law by the Arizona Board of Specialization, a tier-one, court-credentialed Spanish interpreter,
and enrolled in the Diplomado Program in Mexican Public Law and Policy at the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law.

Luke’s practice served 35-40 percent Spanish-speaking clients, and his firm also represented members of the military and their families.

A native Tucsonan, Luke was not always interested in becoming a lawyer. In college, however, he realized his aptitude for reading and
a love of history were good foundations for studying law.

Family law was an especially good fit for Luke as he appreciated getting to know his clients’ personal stories, struggles, and desires
for a better future.

Outside of work, Luke enjoys cooking because, as he says, “I like to eat.” From salad and rice to pita bread and tzatziki sauce
(with a big nod to In-N-Out Burger), he loves it all. Even chopping vegetables can be therapeutic.

He’s also a fan of gardening and says, “It’s fun to see what you can make grow in USDA Zone 9. I have something to harvest
all year long.” Right now, he’s focused on jujubes and pomegranates.

Luke says a trait he admires in attorneys is civility. Luke himself embodies civility, grace, and kindness.

We will miss him at SALA, but are excited about his new adventure as a commissioner!
