A proud fourth-generation Arizonan who fondly remembers his mother’s tamales, retired
Judge James Conlogue has dedicated more than four decades to the pursuit of justice,
service, and mentorship. Born and raised in Morenci, Arizona, he and his wife have
made their home in Hereford for the past 35 years. Jim enjoys the natural beauty of the
surrounding Coronado National Forest, often walking with his dog to reflect and make
thoughtful decisions.
From a young age, Jim wanted to be a judge, a dream that required him to first
become a lawyer. After earning a criminal justice degree cum laude from Arizona State
University, he worked for the Arizona Department of Corrections, where he served as a
corrections officer, counselor, and parole officer. During this time, he earned a master’s
degree in public administration cum laude from the University of Arizona, which set him
on the path to law school. In 1986, Jim earned a Juris Doctor with high distinction from
the UA and launched a successful legal career.
After working for the United States Department of the Navy in Washington, he returned
to Arizona, serving in the Cochise County Public Defender’s Office, later moving into
private practice in Bisbee. His passion for appellate advocacy and the law eventually led
to his appointment as a Cochise County Superior Court judge. Jim served on the bench
for 26 years, including eight years as presiding judge. His judicial service, especially in
juvenile court, was marked by fairness, wisdom, and compassion.
Upon retiring in 2020, Jim, who loves to read history and nonfiction, became a
dedicated volunteer with SALA, assisting in family law clinics and serving on the SALA
Board of Directors. His work with SALA earned him the prestigious 2022 William E.
Morris Pro Bono Service Award. Today, he continues to encourage others to give back,
embodying a lifelong commitment to justice and service. Jim is especially grateful to the
student interns he works with at SALA and wants to recognize their remarkable work.
