Gary Kraft and his family moved to Tucson when he was just 8 years old after his
father retired from the U.S. Navy. He attended Harelson Elementary, Cross Middle
School, and Canyon del Oro High School, setting down deep roots in the Old Pueblo.
After earning a degree in political science from the University of Arizona in 1992, Gary
took a brief break before returning to the UA College of Law to earn his Juris Doctor,
a natural step, he jokes, because “what else can you do with a degree in political
science?”
Gary began volunteering in 2013 for the VLP Minor Guardianship Clinic. Fortunately
for us, he returned recently to volunteer in family law. He is dedicated to serving
low-income Arizonans and has a long history of volunteerism. With good reason, this is
Gary’s third honor from SALA: He has volunteered for 41 clinics and assisted 176 of
our clients!
For Gary, the best part of being a lawyer is winning, which could use a bit of an
explanation. He adds, “Sometimes it’s helping a parent gain precious parenting time,
and other times it’s guiding someone through the maze of paperwork that stands
between them and stability.”
His proudest achievements are his two sons, Cole and Carter. Cole is enrolled in
the Pima College Paralegal Program and works alongside Gary. Carter works at the
Tucson Children’s Museum and studies music at Pima. Gary beams when talking about
them, describing both as “terrific young men and incredible musicians.”
Despite his endless to-do list, which he admits is never completed, he still finds time
for adventure, from climbing Mount Rainier to recently opening his own law firm, Gary
B. Kraft Family Law, PLLC.
Outside the office, he says running makes him feel alive and he enjoys tinkering with
cars. His favorite escapes are Seattle’s cool summers and Ireland’s warm people and
music.
